Two-factor authentication is a security feature that adds an extra layer of security for your account. If you enable this feature, you need to enter your account password and a special verification code sent to your phone via text, voice, or mobile app. This code is specific to your account and changes every time you sign in.

With two-factor authentication added, even if someone steals or guesses your password, they cannot access your account as they also require the code in your phone to sign in.

Common issues with two-factor authentication

The verification code that you receive is valid only for a specific time duration. Ensure that you sign in to your account as soon as you receive the code.
If you did not receive the verification code on your phone or the code did not work, you have to request for a new verification code by signing again to your account.
If you use an authenticator app, open the app to get the new verification code. If the verification code that you received does not work, wait for some time and then use a new verification code.
If you use an authenticator app for both primary and secondary methods, ensure that you are using the right code associated with the account.
Lost my mobile device
If you have lost your mobile device, you must use the same phone number in your new mobile device to receive the verification code via a text message or voice message.
If you have previously signed in to your account from a trusted computer and checked that the computer should remember you, you can sign in from that computer without a verification code. Once you sign in to your account, turn off two-factor verification until you can again get verification codes.
Receiving the verification code only in English
Currently, the verification code sent as a voice or text message is available in English only. NortonLifeLock is working to make it available in other languages. However, if you do not want the verification code in English, you can use an authenticator app to generate the code. Download any free authenticator app on your phone from Google Play or App store.
One of the verification method did not work
If you cannot access one of the methods to receive the verification code, you need to use an alternate method. For example, if you cannot receive voice messages on your phone, you can use the text message method or the authenticator app.
If all of the methods you used to enroll are not accessible to you, your account is locked and we cannot assist you with providing access to your account. In case your account gets locked, you may have to create a new account.

Authenticator app setup or deleting a device from the authenticator app

If your organization provided you with specific steps about how to turn on and manage your two-factor verification, you should follow those instructions first. Otherwise, you can get to your security verification method settings from the Additional security verification page.

Sign in to https://myapps.microsoft.com.
Select your account name in the top right, then select profile.
Select Additional security verification.

For information about using the App passwords section of Additional security verification page, see Manage app passwords for two-factor verification. App passwords should be used only for apps that don't support two-factor verification.

Change your default security verification method

After you sign in to your work or school account with your user name and password, you'll automatically be presented with your chosen security verification method. Depending on your organization's requirements, this can be a notification or verification code through an authenticator app, a text message, or a phone call.

To change your default security verification method

From the Additional security verification page, select the method to use from the What's your preferred option list. You'll see all of the options, but you can select only the ones that are made available to you by your organization.
- Notify me through app: You'll be notified through your authenticator app that you have a waiting verification prompt.
- Call my authentication phone: You'll get a phone call on your mobile device, asking you to verify your information.
- Text code to my authentication phone: You'll get a verification code as part of a text message on your mobile device. You must enter this code into the verification prompt for your work or school account.
- Call my office phone: You'll get a phone call on your office phone, asking you to verify your information.
- Use verification code from app: You'll use your authenticator app to get a verification code you'll type into the prompt from your work or school account.
Select Save.

Add or change your phone number

You can add new phone numbers, or update existing numbers, from the Additional security verification page.

Important

We strongly recommend that you add a secondary phone number to help prevent being locked out of your account if your primary phone is lost or stolen, or if you get a new phone and no longer have your original, primary phone number.

To change your phone numbers

From the How would you like to respond? section of the Additional security verification page, update the phone number information for your Authentication phone (your primary mobile device) and your Office phone.
